The Dumpling Festival (端午节 “Duan Wu Jie”), or Dragon Boat Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Dumpling Festival 2023 falls on Thursday 22 June 2023.
Bak Chang for Dumpling Festival 2023
A wide variety of bak chang, also referred to as zongzi (粽子) or glutinous rice dumpling, is available in Singapore for everyday enjoyment. Many Singapore hotels and restaurants will introduce new and luxurious variations for the annual festival. Here is a brief guide to a few of Singapore’s best traditional bak chang and some of the most interesting rice dumplings for Dumpling Festival 2023.
The options include the extravagant Kurobuta Belly with Cordyceps Flower and Sea Cucumber Rice Dumpling and Ginseng Chicken Rice Dumpling from award-winning chefs to traditional Nyonya, Cantonese, Hokkien or Teochew Bak Chang from the neighbourhood shops and hawker stalls.
Prices of bak chang will likely increase as the festival draws nearer. A number of restaurants offer early bird discounts.

Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Mustard Vegetables Glutinous Rice Dumpling ($22++ each) – delicately wrapped rice dumpling packed with luscious slices of five-spiced pork belly and artfully layered tangy ribbons of preserved mustard vegetables.
Traditional 12-Head Abalone & Preserved Meats Glutinous Rice Dumpling ($49++ each) – exquisitely crafted dumpling enfolded together with a 12-head abalone, Sakura Ebi shrimp, salted egg yolk, chestnut, lotus seeds, pork belly, Japanese dried scallops, sliced mung bean and premium preserved meats.

Chinese Executive Chef Leong Chee Yeng from Jade presents signature Chinese creations with the debut of a new flavour this year, available for purchase by piece or as part of a gift hamper.

Hoo Kee Bak Chang – Traditional Hokkien Bak Chang
Hoo Kee Bak Chang 和记肉粽 won the Michelin’s Bib Gourmand 5 times from 2016 to 2022. It sells Hokkien style dumplings or bak chang all year round. There is the original flavour as well as bak chang with mushroom and bak chang with salted egg yolk. A deluxe all in version, with specially marinated lean pork, roasted chestnuts, salted egg yolk and shiitake mushrooms, is also available.
